When you select the confirmation link in your sign-up email, guided setup opens. It takes about ten minutes and everything you do is saved as you go, so you can close the tab and come back to it.
1. Tell us about yourself
Your name, your website address, and where you heard about us. Your name and where you heard about us are both needed to continue. The website address is optional, and it is reused on the next screen so you do not have to type it twice.
2. Add content to your knowledge base
This is the step that matters most. Your assistant can only answer from what you give it here.
The quickest option is to import your website: leave the address in the field and select Import. Respond Helper follows your sitemap and internal links, and can import up to 1,000 pages from the same site.
You can also Upload a document or Add a question by hand. Everything you add appears on the right as it is read, and you can remove anything you did not mean to include. Add at least one source to continue.
For more help, see Import your website.
3. Test your agent
Select one of the suggested questions, or type your own into the chat on the right. Ask at least one question to continue. These test messages are private and are never shown to customers.
If an answer is wrong or thin, your knowledge base is probably missing something. Go Back a screen, add the missing content, then try again.
If none of your content could be read, this screen says so and lets you carry on. Add something else from Knowledge Base when you are ready.
4. Customize your agent
Set your logo, the name at the top of the chat, the welcome message, and your brand colour. The chat on the right updates as you type, using the conversation you just had. The name and the welcome message are both needed to continue.
There is more to change later under Customize, including lead forms, starter questions, and tone of voice.
5. Choose where your agent will work
Pick your website, WhatsApp, or both. This screen records what you want. You install it in the next step.
After setup
Guided setup leaves you on your dashboard with two things left to do.
Connect a channel. The bar at the top of your dashboard links straight to Channels. Choose one or both:
- Website widget, where you copy and paste a single line of code into your website. See Turn the widget on and copy your code.
- WhatsApp, where you connect your WhatsApp Business number. See Connect your WhatsApp Business number.
Pick a plan. Go to Settings, then Billing. This is what makes your assistant visible to real customers. Until you are on a paid plan the widget stays hidden on your public site, even when the code is already installed.
